Acid Reflux/Anxiety

Hey everyone! I'm new here. My name is Reem, and I'm a 20 year old female.
This past summer I went to the ER twice within a week because I had a really fast heart rate *around 120ish* which absolutely freaked me out. I also became really numb, tingly, and was hypervenilating from thinking I was going to die because I was so scared of what was happening to my body! They kept me over night and did tons of tests on me and found everything to be normal with me. A couple months ago I started having the heart racing problems again *with sweating, frequently goi to the bathroom, feeling extremely hot, mouth dry..etc* and I was SURE something was wrong with my heart. I went to my cardiologist twice and he had me do and EKG, Ultra Sound, and wear a heart monitor for 30 days. He told me everything was fine and that I just have a very nervous personality.  In December I went to an ENT because I was having throat and ear problems and he put a tube down my throat to check everything out and told me that I have Acid Reflux and he put me on some prevacid. I took it for 4 weeks and stopped because he told me I only needed that amount for then. I noticed after I stopped I kept having heart burn, reguritating, stomach aches, hard to swallow, and shortness of breath. My question is, is it possible that havin Acid Reflux can somehow make your heart race, and have shortness of breath?

The only way to accurately check your heart is with what I call a nucular
treadmill test.  The inject dye and can see exactly how your heart looks like.  The fact you are having problems wail exercising is a red flag.
The regular treadmill and ultra sound could miss a heart problem completely.

Go get it done - Acid reflux can be the problem and it also could be a heart
problem.  No coffee, tea, whole wheat ok, complex carbs, no fat, no mayo,
chicken breast ok with no skin, no salad, no banana's.
Stick to this for 3 days with
acid reflux pepcid or other.  Also eat early before 5 if possible. No quick carbs.  I have acid reflux for 10 years & I am still not convinced it isn't heart related - point in fact my husband had what he thought was
acid reflux and he had a heart attack an was icu for a month and a half.
No more acid reflux symptoms for him.

I have gone to the ER with chest pain caused by my angina. One doctor told me I was having acid reflux and/or anxiety. I had to go back into the ER with the same chest pain again, this time my cardiac enzymes were elvated and my blood pressure was 160/100 after taking 3 nitro tablets. The EKG showed an abnormal heart beat. I was referred to a cardiologist who sent me to have tests done. I recently had a chemical stress test and a echo of my heart which the cardiologist said were abnormal. I am going for more blood work and I am having a cardiac CT.
My point being some doctors (depite my family history of heart disease) think I am too young to have heart trouble, I am 44, and try to second guess with saying it is Acid Reflex and/or Anxiety.
You know your own body and you know how it feels. Get it checked out and don't take the old school excuse for an answer.

Wow, that's pretty crazy about your doctor! What a moron! lol. That's not cool. What the heck kind of doctor doesn't make sure for what he's doing and says you don't have a problem when you actually did.

Just recently I went to an ENT and he felt my throat/neck and put a tube down and found nothing. What exactly is a nodule? Would he have felt it or seen it by feeling/putting a tube down my throat? I don't feel any lumps or see any difference in my neck at all.

Oddly enough everything that is happening or has happened to me this year is exactly what I went through 10 years ago when I was in 5th grade! I had the rapid heart rate, loss of weight, stomach problems..etc and they did soo many tests on me and found nothing wrong. All of a sudden I felt better and for years I was perfectly normal up until this past summer where the same symptoms came back again. My doctor says it might be my hormones. I don't even know if that would make sense since im 20 and it's not like im just growing up.

Once again thanks for all the kind words!!

You know what? I actually bought myself an anxiety book from barnes and nobles! I just never read it yet. :( Hahaha I really should! So you had attacks as well? Did you notice a rapid heart rate? The main thing with me is I just need to not get so overly excited about things, and get all anxious..etc. I need to know how to calm myself down and meditate or something. I hear that's a great thing to do! Also, I've noticed that it's been ever since I've graduated *05* I stopped exercising, lost contact with a lot of my friends, and would stay home all day doing nothing because I wanted to take the first year of college off and just relax. That was a bad choice to make because it's been since then that I've had attacks. I've now gotten back into the swing of things when it comes to excercising/being active and it's slowly helping. I also use to have a eating problem where I wouldn't eat enough throughout the day and would feel faint a lot. I use to HATE food, but now I love it. Hahaha but yeah I guess you finally learn when things get bad!

Anyways, here's my myspace. *I don't care if anyone on here see's it because it's on private anyways* but you can totally check it out wwww.myspace.com/hockeycrazy3033 or you can email me at ***@****

My only presenting symptom of severe GERD was shortness of breath.  For two years.  Then I had my first esophageal spasm, and I was certain it was a heart attack, the pain is quite exquisite, let me tell you.  Nexium cured all of that, but then I became unable to tolerate the medication and had to do the cardboard diet.  I also get a nagging little cough from the reflux sometimes, like a tickle.

The other stuff you are describing sounds exactly like a panic attack.  I went to the ER a few times for that too until they convinced me, via Ativan, that it was anxiety.  I was stunned.  I never considered myself that stressed out.

where on your neck is it?

your thyroid is located at the base of your neck, just above your colar bone.  It is shaped like  a butterfly.  So, If that is where you are feeling it, then yeah, it is possible.  So, have your doc check it out.
Also, nodules are not painful in any way.  I had no idea I even had one, none.  And furthermore, I am a strange case becasue, I have absolutely no symptoms of any thyroid problems, except an occasional heart palpitation, whcih I just don't like.  Oh, and of course my nodules.  So, I want to fix them quick, before it turns into something else!

Okay for GERD, I have pasted this website for you both to check out...

http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/acid_reflux.html

I swear from personal experience it works, it's cheap, and it's natural, and most important it will not hurt you!!!!!!  You cannot stay on prescription drugs forever, and furthermore EVERY drug has adverse side effects.  Trust me on that one, I worked at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals for 5 years in consumer advocacy!

Now then, Hockeycrazy this one is for you only.  Just have them check to see if the thyroid is up to no good through your blood work.  And even after my Dr saw the ultrasound, he palpitated my thyroid (which is just a fancy word for feeling it) and he still couldn't find anything wrong.  You can't see a goiter from the outside (well actually there are some pretty horrific ones on teh internet, but that is obvioiusly not my problem).  They can be very small, but still multi nodular.  Your ENT Doc would not be able to see it because it is not "in" your throat.  You can have many different kinds of nodules growing on your thyroid, but I am not saying that you have nodules!!!! In fact you can be hyperthyroid without nodules, and if that is the case your symptoms and blood work would confirm that.  I just wanted you to be aware that, that could be the answer to your Anxiety, GERD, and other symptoms.  Even for when you were 5 years old.  So, instead of being treated for Anxiety which I was on that God awful drug XANAX, you can start being treated for what's really wrong.  Also, I really do hope it is just Anxiety, because I cured myself of that almost a year ago (without drugs), so that is actually an easy one!

Still no matter what the diagnosis, you are so young, please, please, please try to always take a more natural approach to healing yourself!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!  Don't put too much faith in your Doctors, they are not God's (even though they think they are) And a little advice from a head Doc at said Pharmaceutical Co. ..."Don't ever take any kind of pharmaceutical drug ever, not even birth control pills!!!! Only if it is an absolute emergency!!!

take care & let me know if you try teh GERD technique!!! I swear you will notice a difference after one day even!

Thank you soo much for all your help! You're such a sweetheart. :) It's great coming to a forum like this and having people listen and help with your problems. It really makes me feel great.

I'm DEFINITELY going to try the GERD thing and I will let you know how it works!! :)

About the nodule for the thyroid, years back I remember feeling this thing when I touch my neck and it's on the left side and it's about the size of a navy bean. When I touch it, it moves around and does not hurt at all and is very little. I know it's not my lymph nodes because I actually know where those are located. I've asked a lot of people about that and some say that have it too and it's harmless. Could this by any chance be a nodule? I've had soo many people feel it and they tell me it's nothing and I know i've noticed it FOREVER so I don't think it's harmful in any way. lol

Yeah, it's nowhere near the thyroid. I just went to the thyroid message board and some people were saying they know what im talking about and have it too. That's a relief! lol

Hey!

You're truly awesome!! Thanks for being so nice and caring!
I REALLY don't think I have any thyroid problems. I realize that I freak myself out and that's when my heart races. The other day I was actually calm for once. No constant tapping of my feet, no having to hold and play with something in my hands et..and I had a really good breakfast, lunch, and dinner and I noticed my heart rate was actually normal at 80-85. I think it's all in my head and that's it's anxiety more than anything! I just need to clear my mind and not be paranoid anymore. I need some yoga or something!! lol

I just think for all the blood tests I've had, going to the doctors about three times, and cariologist that they know what's going on and have checked me enough and haven't seen anything wrong. I should just be positive!!

Anyways, do you have a myspace or something? They don't have any way we can message each other or anything and well I think you're awesome.

Hey you,

I saw that you posted there, and that GravesLady answered.  She is a pitbull that one.  My very first question had her soooooo pissed off.  She gave her typical two cents and I challenged it, and well, she doesn't like to be challenged!!!  Anyhow, on that forum you would do better if you asked something like, "is it possible I have hyperthyroid, I'm so young?"  Then list any and all symptoms.  I guarantee you'll have a better response.  However, and I do want to warn you, these people have had awful experiences with their thyroids, many of which are having them removed ( I soooooo don't believe in that!)  from thyroid cancer detection.  And if you check the boards for thyca (that's what they call it) you'd think it was crazy common.  It isn't, in fact its' super rare!!!  So, just be forewarned that too, none of them talk about curing themselves with "natural" hormones whcih are available should your thyroid be out of whack.  They are all kind of old school...like your doctor equals God, they know everything, listen to them only.  All you have to do is look at teh long list of ailments GravesLady has suffered and you'd see that her prescription costs have got to be through the roof, and obviously none of her med's ever cured her, they only created a problem somewhere else.  I mean if heart palpitations are from lack of magnesium say, wouldn't you rather try eating a diet rich in magnesium to cure it, rather than some doctor prescribing a beta blocker for teh rest of your life?!

take care you!

Hi you!

Well, thank you for the sweet comments!  I too like nice people, funny how that works.  Anyhow, no myspace for me, I am 38, so it's a little behind my time.

A positive attitude about your health is a wonderful thing!!!!!!!  Especially when it comes to Anxiety.  It took me so long to figure out to go to Barnes and Noble and find books on it, duh!  And I found some great books, with natural stress reduction cures.  They were just the cheapie little paperback ones, but had great exercises and techniques!  The muscle relaxation one is the key thing that got my anxiety under control.  I did it every night for about a month, and there was a world of difference.  Enough so that I could finally do some cardio and yoga which were both essential to finding my way back to normal!!!  ( ap lace I have been comfortably for a almost a year now!)  Just try everything else first, diet working out, relaxation techniques,  and don't rely on prescription drugs, anti anxiety drugs can be horribly hard to get of...I know!!!!!  They work, but for me they made my symptoms a thousand times worse when I tried to get off of them!

Anyhow, I guess if you want, in the question box, you just ask, "abl are you there?"  I did that on teh thyroid  forum one with two other girls, and it worked.  I wouldn't feel safe putting my email on such a public forum.  If you have a myspace I could try reaching you that way, if you'd like.

the good news in regards to your health... you are super young, with a great attitude, and just realize, it's fine to get worked up about life, it's the only one we've got!!!

take care!

^^ that's exactly what I thought when I went to the ER! The doctors were like "we are pretty sure it's anxiety" and im just thinking how? I never thought of myself as someone to be anxious, or stressed out since nothing really bothers me, but ever since then because I've had so many attacks due to the fear of an oncoming one im now all paranoid and stressed all the time!
btw, do you remember what tests they did on you when you were in the ER? Did your heart race as well?

About GERD. I had shortness of breath for quite awhile up until I started taking prevacid again. It's really helped. As for the cough. I have the same thing! Is it like a tickle in your chest/throat that makes you cough?

Yes, something could still be wrong.  Case in point.  I went to teh Dr's and had some bloodwork done for preconception care 2/1/07.  I asked for him to test thyroid since my ob/gyn thought she could feel it in 2004.  Even though all of teh bloodwork at that time came back normal.  I also asked him to check my thyroid, of which he said nothing is wrong with your thyroid and I left without him touching it.  So, while he was on vacation and we were waiting for my blood work to come back, I went in to see the substitute Dr, and asked her to feel my thyroid.  She, said, I think I can feel it.  So, she ordered a thyroid ultrasound.  So, I went back to regular Doc for results, and he said, I am fine nothing is wrong.  So, I said even my thyroid.  He looked at teh papers and said yep.  So, I said even teh ultrasound?  Then he said, what ultrasound?  So after finding those results, he said, "huh, looks like you have a multi-nodular thyroid gland."  So, because I am meeting with a new ob/gyn I asked to have copies of all recent blood work and test, since I didn't want to do it again.  When I got teh copies, I saw that he never did order all of my thyroid function tests.  Only my TSH, which is normal.  So now I have to go through another round of testing, to check my t3's t4's and antibodies, because he didn't do it.

So, him saying that my thyroid was fine was based on one stupid TSH test, which apparently isn't alwasy accurate.  Because if my thyroid was fine, I wouldn't be growing a goiter.

So, you look at your labwork and see if it gives levels for your TSH, t3's and t4's t3 uptake, t4 uptake, and antibodies.  Then you can say for sure.

Also, because I am leaving my idiot Doctor, I asked to have copies of my file, and ya know what, my first blood work I did in 2004 with him said?  my t3 uptake was below the normal range.  Had I known that then, I could have stopped the heart palpitations 3 years ago, and I would not have grown a multi nodular thyroid gland.

take care, and let me know if you try the natural remedy for acid reflux!

abl

P.S.  your Doctor says that Anxiety and Hyperthyroid have similar symptoms, well, if hyper and left untreated it could turn into bigger problems, anxiety left untreated has no consequence.  So, I'd be sure if were you.

Hi there! Thanks for the information. :)

I'm pretty sure when I went to the ER and they kept me overnight that they ran some tests on my thyroid. If I can recall correctly it was the middle of the night and a doctor said he was doing a test on me in which he drew blood from my vein and I asked him what for and he said my thyroid. I know all the tests came out normal. *if indeed he did check it all out* so I guess that's a good thing!!

I guess I forgot to leave the part out where I've had several anxiety attacks whic are very similar symptoms to a thyroid problem. My physician told me from the second I saw her and explained my symptoms that she thinks it's anxiety as well. As did my cardiologist.

I got the testing of everything *including thyroid* in July. Do you think I'd have to get another test soon? Or is it if you don't have a problem then there's no need to?

Hi you,
Well, I am somewhat of an advocate for checking out the health of your thyroid as a possible reason for heart problems.  I googled "hyperthyroid symptoms" and a website came up with this list.  So, I did a little cut and paste.

Common symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism:
    Palpitations           Heat intolerance
    Nervousness         Insomnia
    Breathlessness      Increased bowel movements
Anxiety                 Light or absent menstrual periods
    Fatigue                 Fast heart rate
    Trembling hand    Weight loss
    Hair loss               Muscle weakness
    Staring gaze         Warm moist skin

These are just some.  If you should decide to have your thyroid checked out, which based on your symptoms I would urge you to, make sure they palpitate your neck, do an ultrasound, and do ALL thyroid blood work tests, from TSH, t3's, and t4's.

Now then, for acid reflux, screw the prescription drugs and do this.  Drink 8oz. of distilled water with, 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (Bragg's is easy to find & cheap)  and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda.  Drink 3x's a day, an hour before each meal.  The regergitation, heartburn, and all will be gone in 3 days...I promise!!!!!!!  Let me know how it all turns out!!!
Take care!  abl ;0)

I wouldn't think so. Taking the meds and then stopping them could have actually made your heartburn worse. A lot of meds have after effects like that.
