Air between heart and pericardium

Air between heart and pericardium

A relative of mine, girl 22 years old, was found to have air between her heart and the pericardium. How can the air have come in? In which ways can the air leave her body again?

Dear Han, thank you for your question.  Your friend has a condition called pneumopericardium that was probably noted on a chest x-ray.  This can occur after trauma to the chest or can occur spontaneously.
The air that is present will gradually be reabsorbed into the body and should not pose any problem.
