Alcohol and medication

I have recently had a operation replacing my Mitral valve with a St. Judes mechanical valve. Since the operation I am taking Coumadin, Atenonol, lanoxin, and Lisinopril. I was one to have a beer before the operation but have heard that drinking was not a good idea while taking these medications. I also heard from others that they know of people who do drink on ocassion who are on these medications. Alcohol I know is a blood thinner, would alcohol throw off my INR readings? Also are there any other risk with the other medications and alcohol?

I am aware that this site cost money and You guys are doing a great job. As soon as I get back on my feet, from my operation I will send a donation. Thanks.

The interactions between coumadin and alcohol are complex. Depending on the amount and frequency of alcohol intake, the net result can be either a potentiation or weakening of the effect of coumadin. In particular, binge drinking or regular consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol can be dangerous for people on coumadin. While it is safest to avoid alcohol, I know of several patients who have a drink occasionally without problems. The other medications you take are not a particular problem in combination with alcohol.
