Allergy shots and arrhythmia

by Mytae, Nov 27, 2000 12:00AM
Hello.  Thank you so much for this forum. My question has two parts:

1) I suffer from severe allergies so I've decided to get allergy shots.  I've heard if you have a heart problem this could be dangerous. I have been suffering from PAC's and PVC's (diagnosed by holter monitor) for a couple of years now. I've been getting shots for a couple of weeks. I haven't noticed an increase in palptitaions, but would like to know if I'm putting myself at risk by receiving the shots. I take 5 mg of Zyrtec before each shot to prevent allergic reaction. The Zyrtec coupled with the shots - is this OK for a person who has irregular heartbeats??

2) I was searching your arrythmia archives and noticed that a woman asked about night sweats and said they subsided with beta blockers. The doctor said she could be suffering from high sympathetic tone and that the beta blockers were working because they're very good for that. What is high sympathetic tone?? I also suffer from night sweats so this was very interesting to me.

Thank you!

1. The allergy shots should be reasonably safe and would not be expected to worsen your PACs or PVCs.
2. High sympathetic tone means that your adrenaline is pumping. This can lead to fast heart rates, sweating, etc. Many different causes of night sweats exist other than high sympathetic tone.
