Altitude

I am a 55 yr. old male with Ischemic cardiomyopathy and CHF.  I have an EF of 25% and oxygen uptake of 20.  I am planning a trip to Denver CO next week and am wondering what to expect in terms of being short of breath.  Would I be wise to get a bottle of O2 to take with me??

Dear Joe, thank you for your question.  The average altitude in Denver, CO is 5000 - 5500 feet.  At this altitude, you may have an exacerbation of congestive heart failure symptoms, especially if you abruptly go from sea level to that altitude and don't ascend slowly.  However, you may do just fine if you restrict your activity while in Denver to light to moderate exertion.  Thus, I suggest that you speak with your own cardiologist before your trip to get final recommendations.
