I have been having this feeling in my throat for about 2 weeks now. It started with a small, lumpy feeling in my throat. Now that feeling has progressed to pain in my chest. The pain starts at the base of my throat where I feel that lumpy feeling down to about the middle of my sternum. I have constant pain and it radiates more to the right side of my body. I also had some pain in my shoulder. It also have the feeling in my throat and chest of having run really hard, but this is at rest. It is like a cool feeling with the pain. Also, when I sleep, I wake up with the pain still there, and also with weird feelings in my arms like they have fallen asleep or the circulation is not great. I have been to the doctor, no wheezing or odd sounds that they can tell. He prescribed Bextra and an inhaler, but these are not helping. The pain is constant and very uncomfortable. I don't know whether this is cardiac or pulmonary. I do get pains on the sides of my chest in my lung area and these pains in my chest radiate to my spine. Like my spinal bones are hurting too. I can't stand feeling this way anymore. The doc ordered blood tests to check my thyroid function too...just waiting on those. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I have a histroy of MVP, hiatal hernia, and GERD. Had my gallbladder removed in April 2002. Also have pain in upper right quadrant area. Thanks...

Dear MTV,
Sorry to hear about your chest and throat pain. You describe your pain as being constant and radiating to the right side of your body. Based on what you have told me your pain does not sound like typical cardiac pain. These sensations could be related to your hiatal hernia or GERD.
However, I think it is important to rule out a cardiac cause for your pain. I don't know your medical history, you could have significant risk cardiac factors making a cardiac cause of your symptoms more likely. Therefore, you should consider having an electrocardiagram (ECG), an echocardiogram and a stress test. The echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart, which will evaluate your MVP and check for leaking across the mitral valve. The stress test would be to evaluate the heart for areas that are not receiving adequate blood flow, due to blockages in the heart arteries. A stress echocardiogram is a single test which can evaluate the mitral valve and check for blockages. I would recommend seeing your doctor soon and discussing your concerns with him or her.
Thanks for your question,

often is totally correct. stress is a very bad thing. Information is a good thing. I believe you said you were just trying to find all the information that pertained to your situation. Dont let it overwhelm you. I am thrilled to be the age I am and would not go back for anything, but that is because I did not use my time worrying, I used it to celebrate all that came to me, good or bad.
Michael....just go buy some Pepcid AC and try it. If it helps....well....
Also...I seldom get the regurg...but the pain is something else....
Also...keep a diary of what you eat and find out what sets it off...
BUT STOP YOUR WORRYING....you honestly can create heart problems just from your stress!
i didn't normally throw up either....it just built and built. I begged for antacid of any sort. Then it happened. The only way I could describe the feeling was a tight twisting fist that went up my chest and then a full feeling in my throat. Like I had not swallowed correctly.
see i don't have any of that. regurg or anything for that matter. so i'm really not even sure if i have acid reflux. it is so tough to describe this feeling i get in the lower throat bottom of chin jaw .
it is prescription. they pretty much believed me when I regurgitated on them in the hospital. it was prescribed real fast actually.
whats protoxin? prescription? over counter? how do you get diagnosed with acid reflux.? is there a specific test the doc gives you? also do you get weird pins and needles and shooting pains down arms from acid reflux?
pretty much everything you said covers how I felt when I had acid reflux. it went all over the board how or where I would feel the pain. There is not always "fluid" coming up the throat as a tell tale. Since I started taking Protonix it is a thing of the past. Unless I am stupid enough to eat chocolate which sends my stomach acid on a wild ride.
hey often and fio thanks for your response. it may be acid reflux. but i get that senstation in my back or lower throat at the exact spot it feels like. its almost like an electric feeling pain. does that sound like acid reflux. also i don't recall fluids coming up my throat. does that sound like acid reflux as well? definetly feel something in my jaw. under the chin and sometimes in my ears as well. very strange
Michael...do try some kind of antacid...pepcid AC or something. see if that helps. My acid reflux causes pain in my upper chest, below the breastbone, sometimes in my jaw, my ears and my neck. You should, however, mention it to the doc...with all your recent tests you are probably ok...but to ease your mind, let them know. And don't obsess, ok. You know you tend to.
Sounds like you need to be physically evaluated as soon as you can arrange it. Your throat discomfort sounds like it could fit with a heartburn type issue. Your stomach is located low chest area and stomach acid can cause esophagial symptoms like you describe.
Have you tried to take maalox or simiar when you feel the pain? Take a good dose and see what happens. Also try an over the counter prilosec approach for a few wks.
Gold std though is to be thoroughly assessed when the pain is happening at a heart center to exclude that as the issue.
Hope you get some answers soon.
