Amiodarone 200mg for prophylaxis of AFib after Cardioversion

Hello Everybody.

My mom is 71 years old, she was diagnosed with Chronic A Fib 1 & 1/2 year. She was on Toprol , but was getting too tired , and started getting chest pressure on Exertion. The Dr then put her on Bisoprolol , which really helped her a lot , Her chest pressure on Exertion stopped. But i asked her to get a Angiography done to rule out CAD , as i felt the pressure may be Angina. When she was in the Hospital , the Dr did DC Cardioversion , and she was back in sinus rhythm.

Dr has put her on 200mg of Amiodarone for prophylaxis , i.e. she does not go back into AFIB. I read a lot on the Internet on the side effects and negatives of Amiodarone. I would like to get ur suggestions based on personal experiences. She would be taking Warfarin and Bisoprolol also .. I am very afraid ..

Amiodarone does have a lot of side effects (namely affecting the lung, liver, and thyroid) but is used often as either primary or adjunctive antiarrhythmic therapy patients with atrial fibrillation. If someone has failed cardioversion multiple times in the past, amiodarone might be considered (among other antiarrhythmics) to help the success of another cardioversion as well as sustaining a normal rhythm afterwards. However, there should be periodic bloodwork to make sure there are no adverse effects of the medication on the rest of the body. Additionally, there are interactions between amiodarone and warfarin, so careful attention should be made to ensure that the level of blood thinning is not too extreme. This should be done by regular INR checks and adjustements of warfarin that is being taken.
