Angina, Tachycardia, or just Heartburn?

by Alan, Sep 29, 1999 12:00AM
I am a 31 year old male and fairly active but I have been experiencing chest pain on and off for the last 5 years or so. More specifically the pain can best be described as a tightness on the left side of my chest and, seemingly at times emanating from underneath my left armpit but often on or under the left chest muscle itself. It has never occured during times of increased heartrate (I workout and play tennis often and I never experience the pain then).

I have had various heart and chest tests done over the years and a couple of emergency visits but the feedback I have received was that though my symptons may appear to coincide with those associated with a heart attack, all signs indicate that I am too young and healthy and that I am more likely just experiencing heart burn.  However, more recently the chest pain is becoming more regular. After doing alot of reading on symptons it seems to me that I might have Ventricular Tachycardia in its stable form and the pain and discomfort I am feeling is unstable angina.  On the other hand, besides this now daily tightness in my chest, I feel great and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. How can I ascertain whether this is just heartburn or signs of tachycardia?

Dear Alan,
in view of your symptoms, i would consider an evaluation that included a stress test to evaluate this pain.  If this is negative then GI sources could be ruled out.
