Angiogram

by Avii, Nov 13, 2001 12:00AM
A relative of mine in India is currently suffering from a low pulse rate and angina. They have told him that he will need to undergo an angiogram and that he will almost certainly need an operation, either an angioplasty or ByPass. Can you confirm that this is the best way forward, or should other tests be undertaken prior to the angiogram.

Dear avii,
It would depend somewhat on his symptoms.  If the symptoms are typical angina pain (e.g. pressure or burning in the left chest and moving down the arm or neck) it may be the best way to proceed.  If there is some doubt as to the nature of the symptoms further testing such as a stress test may be indicated first.  Once the diagnosis is sure the most effective way to treat angina pain is with angioplasty or bypass surgery.  Medication may be tried first and will sometimes prevent the need for either of these.  The level of health care in India is pretty good for those who can afford it.  If he would like a second opinion we see many internation patients at the Cleveland Clinic and arrangements can be made by calling the number below and asking for the "International center".
