Ankles continue to swell, very worried!

Hi, my ankles continue to swell.  On July 29 after seeing my newest TSH blood results my doctor felt it was because of a need to change my thyroid medicine Synthroid from .88mcg to 100mcg. I have been taking the new dose for six weeks and my ankles are still swelling.

On Sep. 4 my doctor determined that I have Tendonitis in my right wrist and has me taking Advil 600mg 3 x daily, as well as, wearing a brace with a metal bar in it to support my wrist. My ankles are still swelling and I'm very concerned. Could the Advil cause water retention and therefore ankle swelling? I have been drinking 4 to 6 glasses of water daily in addition to other fluids hoping this might help alleviate the swelling. Help?

Advil is ibuprofen which is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDS) and these have been linked to increased fluid load which can cause an increase in blood pressure. I would imagine the fluid load increase could also cause additional edema in your ankles, but that's just my opinion, I'm not a Doctor. I have a prescription for Celebrex for my knees due to OA and I am hesitant to take it for that reason. Having said that, ibuprofen is at the low end of the NSAIDS and would have less of an effect, although 1,800 mg a day is a good amount. You should ask you doctor this questions.

Hope some of this helps,

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response. I wasn't sure if Advil was an NSAID or not. I decided just today to back down to 1,200 mg daily and see what happens. Yes, you're right I should be asking my doctor and plan to.

Once again thank you!

Jon,  just wanted to give you an update on my ankles.  I stopped taking the Advil and within 2 days the swelling all but went away. Now no swelling.  Thank you again for your earlier comments.
