Another ? abou dissection an d thalium testing

by melisa-bains, Mar 05, 1999 12:00AM

I needed to clarify something about the question I posted Mar 3.  My original  message was:  I had a spontaneous coronary artery dissection on Oct 6, 1998.  I had 5 stents put in the day of the MI.  I had restenosis occur on Dec 22, 1998 in one of the stents.  What I forgot to mention is that I had another stent put in the stent where the rstenosis occured.  This stent was placed through angioplasty on Dec. 22.  I now have 6 stents in the RCA.  I am now having pain between my shoulder blades and I worry it is restenosis again.  I had a stress test and an EKG at the end of Febuary. My doctor now wants me to do a thalium stress test.  I have read that most cardioligist recommend no extreme exerution.  I wonder if you think it is a safe test to do with someone who 5 months ago had a dissection after having a baby?  I originally forgot to say the restenosis was treated with another stent.  Thank you

Dear Melissa,
Given you have symptoms, I think it unsafe NOT to stress you with stress thallium to determine if the heart muscle supplied by the RCA is ischemic (i.e. not receiving enough oxygen during exercise.  A stress test is not "extreme stress", rather it is a controlled exercise test whereby the cardiologist can learn the most about blood flow to the heart (even more so if you add an imaging modality like echo or thallium to the test.) I am very sorry that you had this unfortunate occurence; keep in mind that your doctors are doing all that they can to treat you with stents and avoid bypass surgery.
I hope this information is useful. Information provided in the heart forum is for
general purposes only.  Only your physician can provided specific diagnoses and therapies.
Feel free to write back with further questions. Good luck!
