Antibiotics for Regurgitation

by Karina, Jul 10, 2001 12:00AM
Hello.  I'm concerned about my son who has recently had an echo because his Dr. heard a slight II/VI systolic ejection murmur. The echo revealed trace mitral, pulmonary and tricuspid regurgitation.  No mitral valve prolapse was found.  No stenosis.
Does he need to take antibiotics before dental and other invasive procedures?  Would it be harmful for him to do heavy weight lifting?

Thank you.

Dear Karina,
Trace regurgitation is within normal limits of echocardiographic findings and does not require antibiotics prior to dental procedures. Weight lifting is not contraindicated in general but his doctor can give the final clearance for this.

I was told 10 years ago I had MVP and a leaky heart valve. It seems to run in my family. I have to be pre-medicated before each dentist appt.  My heart skips beats on a daily basis. I have to limit my exercise, it makes my heart act up.

My doctor told me that weight lifting and or climbing
can increase regurgitation in the valves when its present
so I dont do weight lifting any more.I was a big fan of A.Schwarzenegger but until 1997 when he had his valve replaced I realized that my doctor was probably right.
