Any Advice

My mother just had Quintiple (5) bypass surgery .. She was normal like any one of us(her age is 63) . Now she does not know who i am at all. The Doctor said that memory loss is a common side effect for patients that undergo that kind of operation..I was prepared for that side effect if it occurred .. She will not stop repeating one word (the word is NO) . The doctor and myself have asked her questions and all she says is NO to everything. Even if no one is talking to her , she will not stop saying no . She will just stare at the ceiling ... She was suppose to be out of ICU and relocated to a regular room but she is still in ICU. They have not made her to stand up  or sit down because she has no clue of Who she is and what has happened and her only respond to everything is NO.. It's very hard to see my mother in that condition. Any insight would help me a lot... Does anyone knows of a person that went something similar like this ? Any Advise ?? I don't know how to react with my mother.......

Memory issues are not uncommon after bypass surgery. Anaesthetic can be absorbed into body tissue quite rapidly in some people, so it takes much longer to wear off. There is also disassociation, where the brain basically shuts down to some extent due to trauma. The less processing it has to do, the less energy and oxygen it requires and it is an inbuilt life support system. It's also a way for the brain to lessen discomfort from trauma, such as very invasive surgery. It should normally get back to normal in a few days, but in some  cases can take months, it is a gradual thing. Once her memories start returning, it is common for the shorter term ones to appear first. Mental stimulation is a good catalyst for recovery. Have you thought about taking in some photos for her to look through for example? She may not show any interest, but it will stimulate the brain. I assume they have eliminated any kind of stroke?
