Aortic Aneurysm

by CGTMHI, Dec 19, 2002 12:00AM
My husband got his gall bladder out at noon Tuesday.  The surgery took about an hour and a half.  The gall bladder itself wasn't in to bad a shape and Dr. Irons said his liver looked great, but,  he has an Aneurysm in the aorta right above where the gall bladder was, we knew this for a while, but it isn't big enough to be worried about.  Dr. Irons said there is something behind his pancreas pushing against it.  He thinks it might be another aneurysm in the aorta behind the pancreas.  They took pictures of it and are sending them to Dr. Elison in Columbus, the pancreas specialist that they sent him to before.

He came home from the hospital yesterday at 8am and has felt real good.  He was not sick to his stomach this morning either.  Maybe the pancreas was enlarged from the bad gall bladder and now that it is gone he will be ok.  Thats what we are praying for.  None the less, Dr. Irons is sending the pictures he took to the pancreas specialist in Columbus, so they will check it out.

My question is, should my husband see a Cardiologist too?  I know that aortic has something to do with the heart.  If not a cardiologist, then what type of doctor should my husband be seeing?  We have insurance that will let us go to the Cleveland Clinic, so can you recommend someone for us?

Thank you and God bless you for all you do for people like us.

Gail,

Thanks for your question.  Glad to hear your husband is recovering well.

Aortic aneurysms found in the abdomen are usually handled by a team that would include a vascular surgeon and internist or a vascular surgeon and cardiologist.

If your husband was to come to the Cleveland Clinic, I would recommend that he see a general cardiologist first to confirm the aortic aneurysm and receive a pre-operative evaluation.  From there, your husband could be seen by a vascular surgeon.  I have worked with Dr Lyden the most, but Drs Eagleton and Greenberg also have excellent reputations.

Good luck.
