Aortic Bicuspid Valve

Aortic Bicuspid Valve

Posted by Ryan on May 03, 1999 at 11:32:00
I have recently been diagnosed with a congenital Aortic Bicuspid Valve while in the application process with a police department.  During the medical testing, the physician conducting the exam heard what he thought was a murmur and referred me to a cardiologist in order to diagnose the origin of the sound.  I am currently waiting for the cardiologist to make a final recommendation to the original physician or whether this condition would exclude me from employment as a police officer.  Would this type of defect be something serious enough to disqualify me from employment?
I have led a very active life, am in great physical shape (running and lifting weights) and I have never experienced any symptoms.  Thanks...

Dear Ryan
If all you have is a congenitally bicuspid aortic valve, that is not a reason for any disqualification. If you have associated valve leaking or tightness that interferes with the flow of blood, that might need surgical repair, depending on the severity. Your bicuspid valve is prone to developing problems in the future, but again, that should not disqualify you - it just means you need periodic visits with a cardiologist.
I hope this has been useful. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to write back.
