Aortic arch replacement without touching valve?

Aortic arch replacement without touching valve?

I have posted questions before and really appreciate this service.  I wanted to follow-up on the recommendation made by cardiologist.

I have a bicuspid Aortic valve (very mild regurgitation -- no problems), and a dilated aortic arch.  Since the dialation has reached 5.5 cm, the doctor's are recommending surgery to replace the arch -- however, they believe that the valve may not need to be replaced at this time.

Some questions:

What are the chances on having problems once again occur with the arch (since I understand that the dilation was caused by the issues related to the valve?)

What are the chances that this will change the dynamic of bloodflow ,etc. to extend the time period that I have to get the valve replaced?  (or could it shorten the period?)

What other issues should be considered in this situation?

Thanks in advance!

Dear David,

Aortic arch repair is certainly a major undertaking as you understand.  It may be best to replace your entire root including valve if that is necessary to give you the best lasting results. This is caused a David procedure appropriately enough.
Or it might be very feasilbe based on the location of the dilation to consider an isolated aortic repair.  these are very specific issues that should be asked of the surgeon doing the procedure.

If you are interested in any further information. I would most highly recommend Dr. Bruce Lytle here at CCF for a second opinion.  You would want to minimize the number of potential surgeries that you have in this area! and want things done right the first time.
