Aortic root diameter

Aortic root diameter

During an untrasound for a previous PFO inclusion, the test showed that my arotic root was slightly enlarged up to 3.7 cm in dia.  Is this a problem.  I am 70 years old.  BP has normal been in the lower range of 110 to 65 but recently has ranged in the Dr office 135-70 r 140 over 70 for recent two years.

Thanks

For enlarged aortic roots -- the standard of care has been aggressive blood pressure and lipid control with serial non-invasive imaging (echocardiogram) to follow size and rate of increase. Surgical intervention is usually warranted for those with root > 5.5, unless there are other co-morbidities (bicuspid aortic valve, history of Marfan's syndrome) in which it may be indicated at 4.5 cm, or if there is evidence of rapid growth, mention of rupture/dissection, or symptoms.
