Are murmurs a sign of trouble?

Are murmurs a sign of trouble?

I am a 51 year old female.  My father died of a heart attack after years of CAD.  I do not smoke, am not grossly obese ( I am 5'2 and weigh 150 lbs( having just recently losing 35 lbs). Five nights ago, I had crushing chest pain which lasted about one hour then went away.  I felt fine so I went to work (where I teach first grade).  During the day, I felt numbness and tingling in my left arm.  I went to my Dr. and he found the EKG was totally normal--However he did hear a heart murmur.  I was sent to have an echo-cardiogram where I found out I do have two heart murmurs (mitral valve and aortic valve).  The tech told me that I would have to speak to my doctor.  I have not heard from him since the test (four days ago)--So I assume no news is good news.  I am still having some issues though, numbness and tingling in my left arm, occasional pain in my shoulder and under my left arm--But I feel fine.   I do not want to over-react however I do not want to under react either.

Heart murmurs can be both benign and serious depending on the type (systolic, diastolic), severity, the valve involved, and most importantly, the underlying etiology. Having an echocardiogram is usually the first step in the evaluation of a heart murmur, especially in the setting of new symptoms. Unfortunately, it is impossible to be able to tell how serious this is without looking at the echocardiogram first-hand, and without a complete history and physical examination. However, the correct steps have been taken and would make sure you follow-up with your cardiologist for the interpretation of the results.
