Atrial Fibrillation

Is pneumonia or legionnaires disease an accepted precipitating cause for atrial fibrillation?

Definitely.  When you are sick with an infection, your body is under a lot of physical stress which can cause a catecholamine surge (high levels of certain hormones).  These hormones cause your heart rate to be higher and can easily lead to atrial fibrillation.  Many times after the infection is treated, even within a few hours, the atrial fibrillation will stop.  However, sometimes we have to use other measures to convert your heart back to a normal rhythm.

Hope this helps.
