Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial Fibrillation

My husband has atrial fibrillation.  At times it is so bad he cannot hardly stand up from being so dizzy and sick to his stomach.  I can even place my hand on his chest and feel it flip-flop.  He is on coumadin, Lipitor, Hydrochlorothiazide, Lotensin, Atenolol, and Aspirin, and he is allergic to all antiarrhythmic drugs.  Other times, he is better.  He never knows what will trigger the atrial fibrillation.
My husband was a normal active man, before he had atrial fibrillation and bypass surgery.  My question is: How do we go about finding the key to his fibrillation?   We have been very aware of any activity or foods or anything he does, preceding his fibrillation attacks.  There is no specfic visible cause. What can we do?

Dear Jan,

It sounds as if your husband has atrial fibrillation intermittently since his bypass.  If this is the case, avoid caffeine, alcohol and stress  I would also consider a higher dose of atenolol after checking with his cardiolgist or considering other antiarrhythmics.  there are many on the market and doubt that your husband would be allergic to all of them.
