Hi. I don't know if this helps, because it probably would be determined by all factors and symptoms. I was admitted to ER in Dec/07 for ab pain, and they found my BNP to be 1072. This sent up major league flags as to my being cleared for Gall bladder removal surgery. After 12 days in hosp, and new dx (for me) of severe heart failure, I was sent home and final blood test showed a BNP of 676. They still sent me home.
For a reference;  BNP level of 0-100 is  considered normal. >300 mild heart failure.  >600 moderate HF, and > 900 severe.
Hope this helps somewhat and good luck. - Steve
