BP Medication

by questsat, Jan 12, 2002 12:00AM
I hope you can help!  I'm 56, high BP and I am having some side effects from my hypetension medication which has recently been changed:

It was:

Atenolol 50mg (am) 25mg (pm)
Adipine 10mg (am + pm)
Approvel 150mg (am)
Bendrofluazide 2.5mg (am)
And for cholesterol 20mg (am)

Recently my BP rose and the Approvel 150mg was prescribed for pm as well and to counteract some side effects the Atenolol of 25mp (pm) was doubled to 50mg

So I’m now taking:

Atenolol 50mg (am and pm))
Adipine 10mg (am + pm)
Approvel 150mg (am and pm)
Bendrofluazide 2.5mg (am)
And for cholesterol 20mg (am)

The BP is now at around 140/90 and side effects are every few days diarrhea, and I find that I cannot “stay still” in bed.  It’s not exactly cramp but an numbness on pressure points so I have to keep moving.  I’ve an exceptionally good bed, and it didn’t happen to this degree before the medication was changed.  The other thing I suffer from is  continuous phlegm / catarrh.  What a sorry state I’m in!

My first question is can the medication be the cause of this and secondly what other regimes might be appropriate please?

Many thanks

Dear quest,
Adipine (nifedipine) can cause restlessness and sleep disturbances in <2% of individuals according to the package insert.  Cholesterol medications can also cause sleep disturbances.  Aprovel (Irbesartan) is an angiotensin receptor blocking agent which may cause cough.  Diarhea (diarrhea) is listed as a possible side-effect of most drugs.  We do not have bendrofluazide in the US and I am unfamiliar with this drug.

The only way to see if any individual drug is causing your side effects is to come off the drug for a short period and see if the symptoms go away.  If they do and then come back after restarting the medication you can be certain that the drug is causing the symptom.  Talk to your doctor about your concerns and work with him to see if you medications are causing your symptoms. If they are there are many other possible anti-hypertensives that can be tried.  If they are not then other causes of your complaints must be found.
