Bad taste after heart surgery

by Iperm, Jun 13, 2007 12:00AM
Since my husband's open heart surgery in March, he has had a terrible taste in his mouth.  So bad that it wakes him up at night. He is off several of the meds that he took right after surgery, but is still taking Coreg, and will have to continue taking it.  Could this drug be causing it?  His doctor doesn't think so, but doesn't know what is.  Also he was on amioderone for a long time but has been off it for 3 weeks.  Could this drug have caused it?  It affects the way food tastes to him, and even though his heart is working great now, this taste in his mouth is driving him crazy. Is there something he could take to counteract whatever is giving him this foul taste?  Thank you.

Hello,
That is an interesting observation that I have heard several male (haven't seen a female yet but I bet there are some) post CABG patients make.  I don't know of any studies looking into it.  What I have seen in a few patients is that they have a bad taste in there mouth, brushing teeth or mouth wash does not help, and it decrease their taste for food.  I can tell you from experience that the patients I have seen the bad taste went away with time.  I do not know of anything to make it better.

Coreg is a very good medication.  Do not see parageusia (bad taste) as a side effect of either amiodarone or coreg.  you could always try coming off one medication at a time to see if it helps.  The problem is that the sensation tends to go away with time, so you won't know for sure if it is the medication or coincidence and I would hate to have you thinking that coreg caused a problem when it did not -- as I said before, it is a very good medication.

I hope this helps.  Thanks for posting.
