Best BP Medication - first timer ;-)

My diastolic has been running high, very high at some points usually in the evening (while resting).  Systolic ranges from 120-150 but diastolic is generally 88-115 (for a high), usually in the mid 90's.

My cardio hasn't put me on meds but I feel that I need to try them as my diastolic has been spiking way to high lately.  I'm going to see my GP tomorrow (can't get into the cardio for another month) and will ask her to rx something.

I've been reading a lot but am confused (as usual ;-) - beta blockers vs ACE vs diuretics?  A NP friend of mine says start with diuretic but my sodium is low overall so I wonder if that would even help?

Which ones have the least side effects?  I'm already on Prevestatin for high cholesterol, and a few other drugs.  I'm a 45 yr old woman, just a few lbs overweight so I know that some healthy lifestyle changes are in order (I'm pretty good with my diet, never eat fast food - not too much frozen or ever fried).

Thanks so much for your assistance!

Normally, it takes three consecutive readings above 120/80 to get diagnosed with high blood pressure. There are many choices. I take Benicar HCT. Benicar (olmesartan) is in a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow and it helps the kidneys to eliminate extra fluid. It has dropped my blood pressure from 140/85 to my latest 90 day average of 110/67. I have been stable at these numbers for 4 years and counting.

I have tried beta blockers but I hated the reduced heart rate, made it uncomfortable to exercise. As I said, there are many options, you should discuss it with your doctor.

Good luck,

Jon
