Beta Blocker Safety

by Jonathan, Nov 19, 1999 12:00AM
I have two questions.  But first, a little background.  I have suffered from random autonomic symptoms for about a year now.  Cardioligist performed several tests -- including stress echo -- with all negative results.  Said it could be anxiety/panic, could be stress, etc.  He put me on 50mg of ToprolXL, taken once every evening before bed.  Told me this would help correct the autonomic imbalance he perceived to be causing my tachycardia, palpitations, etc.  I am 27 yr. old male.

Questions:

1)  Is this Beta Blocker a safe medication to be taking?  I read about discontinuance causing rise in blood pressure, heart rate, etc.  Don't want to risk anything -- what should I know about this medication?

2)  After visiting the dentist, was told that I needed oral surgery within the next month to remove a severely impacted wisdom tooth.  Will be general anesthisia (sp?) and be somewhat complicated as far as this type of surgery goes (bone replacement, etc.)  Anything I should be concerned about or tell the surgeon relative to my cardiac symptoms?  Do not know anything about this -- but know that general anesthesia is always a serious thing - do not want to risk arrythmias or anything else happening while out.

My cardiologist does not have very good bedside manner -- so it is difficult to discuss these matters with him.  Thanks for your input.

1. Beta blockers are very safe. Suddenly discontinuing a large dose can cause rebound elevations in heart rate or blood pressure, though this is more often a concern for patients with coronary artery disease or hypertension.
2. With a negative stress echo, your risk from surgery or general anesthesia is low.
