Beta Blocker vs Calcium Channel Blocker?

Dear Drs.
Thank you for this service it is very helpful.
I've been battling SVT's for months. Gone to the emergency room, worn the halter, been to cardiologists, the whole nine yards.
Iam working with my GP to figure out what meds to take.  He put me on 121/2mg. Atenolol and my heart went wild.  Infact it has been 24 hours since I took the pill and my shoulders are sore and yesterday I felt a heaviness on my chest and through my arms. This scares me (trying new meds that make things worse).  Now he gave me Verelan PM, I am waiting a few day's for my fear to subside.  What do you think?  What is the difference between a Beta Blocker and a Calcium Channel Blocker? So far I feel that the SVT's are related to my menstrual cycle. It has been mentioned that estrogen may help taking it prior to cycle. My Gp is open for suggestions. What meds. would you suggest that won't throw my into an attack?
Thank you so much, Dee
