Beta Blockers and exercise

Beta Blockers and exercise

51 year old, had heart check-up for slight PVC's that started few months ago.  EKG and 64 slice CT showed no calcium or CAD.
PVC's not an issue.
Currently taking minimal Beta Blocker(BB) for PVC's & moderate high BP, This has reduced resting HR from 70 to 55, and BP from 150/85 to 128/75.
Before BB, my exercise HR for typical 30-40 min workout was 120.
My Question - After BB's, should the same HR be used?  I notice my normal endurance/fatique level is hit at about 110 HR.
Will your endurance level be reduced slightly and will you build back up endurance over time anyway.

Hi.  People on beta blockers often report a slightly reduced exercise tolerance and lower heart rates - pretty much the same exact thing you talked about in your post.  Most times you consider that the doctor prescribed them for good reason, so the benefit outweighs the annoyance factor.  I would say pay more attention to your usual intensity level and how you FEEL during a workout instead of actual heart rate.  If you were at 120 and you're now at 110, that sounds really good.

If in doubt, always ask the doctor.  And good for you for staying active and fit!

Beta blockers can influence heart beat rate and exercise capacity greatly.  I take beta blockers for other reasons than PVC's, I have high BP and heart attack history.  I'm 65 years old.  I can tell you from my experience that they have a huge influence on the ability to exercise. I have exercised for many years, and the introduction of beta blockers was like a governor had been installed in my body.  My heart rate when doing moderate aerobic exercise dropped about 30 points, from about 130 to under 100.  I'm currently exercising at a hospital where my progress is monitored for an hour to determine what heart beat rate is best for me, I tend to overdo, and exercise is hurting my heart instead of helping it. I'd discuss with your doctor the importance of establishing new heartbeat guidelines.  Good luck, it is very frustrating to try and exercise with a governor holding you back!
