Bicuspid aortic valve leaking

Bicuspid aortic valve leaking

My son is 13 and was diagnosed at age 5 with a bicuspid aortic valve.  He has been fine, no stenosis, or leaking, up until now.  He had his three year check up this week and the doctor said that his valve is now leaking, a little.  He now has restrictions on lifting and cannot be a catcher anymore in baseball.  Do I need to worry that if he has leaking now, that he will need surgery soon?  Do I have to watch him closer for any unusual signs?  Is it bad that a 13 year old has leaking?  What should I expect?

Did your doctor speak to you about echocardiograms to monitor the leaking about every three months?  Because he is young and is still growing, he could outgrow this.  Sometimes heart valves get better on their own.  As far as eating, we know that red meat is bad for the heart.  Organic vegetables and fruits that are fresh are best.  You can try watching his diet to make sure he is not eating many fats or high salt intake.  Signs of a heart valve getting worse are mainly shortness of breath.  The more short of breath he is, the higher the possibility that the valve may be getting worse.  My mom had a biscuspid aortic valve and it did not give her a lot of trouble until she turned 70.  Her valve remained unchanged throughout most of those years.  Having difficulty climbing stairs would be a concern and if that happens you should get him to the doctor to check the valve.  Most people that I know with cardiomyopathy and leaky heart valves, get the echocardiogram every three months.  Continue monitoring, he should not overdo his activity, he may get tired more easily, he should get plenty of rest, eat healthy.  The heart tries to fix itself, so hopefully that will be the case with your son.

Thank you so much for responding to my concerns.  His cardiologist suggested seeing him in one year, not 3 months.  She said that the valve has a minor leak, and not to worry too much at this time.  But, I am a mom, and I worry.  Thank you for your advice.
