Blood Pressure Monitoring and Classification

I am on Toprol XL and Hydrochlorot to help control my BP, which my cardiologist attributes to my emotional disorder of anxiety and panic disorder(which I'm also being treated for).
The Cardio truly believes that once the anxiety/panic is under control, I can wean off the HBP meds.

My question is:  I monitor my BP at home with a good, approved, arm cuff monitor.  My first measurement is usually high- like 135/82....however, on a 2nd reading appx. 2 minutes later, it will be in the area or 117-122/68-80.  I also have other occasions where my initial reading is within range:120/80 or lower.

So, given these isolated high initial readings----does that classify me as having "uncontrolled Hypertension".  In other words, should succesful treated hypertension ALWAYS result in a 120/80 or lower reading to be termed "succesful?"
Thanks-Jerry

jerry,

I think your cardiologist is doing the right thing. People are too apt to dismiss isolated readings of blood pressure. In fact the new guidlines for treating hypertension highlight this point, and even classify the range of 130-140 systolic into the prehypertension classification.

The nubers you are getting are on treatment and in a reasonable range and I wouldnt classify you necessarily as out of control.

Blood pressure and the complications related to it are ina linear decrement.  Through lifestyle modificaition you may be able to come off or stay on lower doses of your medications over time.

Remember, if you are getting these readings while sitting at home, think what might happen during the normal stress of your job, or while you are in the car, etc...

good luck

Jerry,

From your numbers, I don't see how anyone could say you have hypertension.  When you take a BP, you need to wait some time to retake it like 15 minutes.  Taking blood pressures close together will give you false readings at times.  Sounds like you need to relax, decrease your stress and not worry about this.  Exercise regularly, keeping weight under control, and stress reduction plans would help you enormously.

Rick:
Thanks for the input.  The only reason my cardiologist placed me on the BP Meds is to help in keeping the numbers and heart rate rate low during the anxiety states.
I've also become extremly obsessive-compulsive over having my pressure taken, and in the doc's office, the "white-coat" syndrome takes effect, and the numbers soar.
There are 2 schools of thought on the white-coat effect: one thinks its not a real serious problem, and the other says it is....so< I'll err on the side of caution and try to get the anxiety/panic and BP readings under control.

Hi Jerry,
I too have borderline HP.  I take Toprol XL and home moniter.  Try to take 5 or 6 deep breaths before checking your BP also it is amazing the difference if you can close your eyes 7 visualize something peaceful and totally relax your body. My readings will drop 8 to 10 points.  Wishing you the best!
