Blood Presure

I am 25 yrs old, played sports in college, always have been in excellent shape. Im obsessive compulsive and worry, this translates into worry about my health a lot so I have always go to the doctor fairly often, at least a couple times per year. My blood pressure has always been normal even when nervous, at least he's never said it hasnt been normal. I went last April and the doctor said it was normal once again when I went for a checkup; I never thought anything about having it read, just thought of it as routine when I visit the doctor. Then a month later after reading an article about dangers of bp, this made me aware how important it is. So I had mine checked a couple months after it was normal at the doctor (the top # was abou 120 then) at a pharmacy and i got extremely nervous and my heart started beating hard, sweaty palms, etc and it was high for the first time ever. I figured it was because I was so anxious about having it done since I had no history of high bp. I decided to have the doc check it and I immeidately got incredibly clammy and nervous once again and it was 150, then after he knew I had never had high bp he started talking and it went down to 140 then a couple minutes later to 130 (dont recall the bottom #). He said not to worry about it that I was healthy . I also asked another doctor and he said the same thing bc of my history of good bp and having it checked previously at least twice/year. Being obsessive, nothing really assures me and I wanted to get feedback on this forum. Thanks for the input.

Hi Sting,

You are actually ahead of the game.  It sounds like you know you don't have high blood pressure, but you are more worried about having high blood pressure.  Knowing that you have obsessive tendencies makes it a lot easier.  You should be able to talk yourself down from your fears.  The key to panic anxiety is realizing that you have it and knowing that you aren't going to die -- you just feel like your going to do die.  Once you know this, you should be able to convince yourself that you are fine.  Your episode in the pharmacy sounds like a panic attack.

It sounds like you do not have high blood pressure now and hopefully won't ever have it.  If you do, there are good medications to treat it.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, this is exactly what happened to me. Unfortunately, being OCD, I cant not think about certain things. I thought I had skin cancer, MS, and HIV all this year from being a hypocrondriac (sp?). But your reply makes me fele better.

Thanks again

I wouldn't worry about a one time high like that.  Also, you talked about panicking when you saw that the top # was 120 - that is nothing to panic over - 120 is quite normal.

I know it is much easier said than done, but please please try not to obsess over this or other "small" things because you will eventually find yourself having panic attacks and then you will be dealing with those the rest of your life.

Please try to relax and good luck!

I've been reading this forum since November waiting on a thread like this one-I too have always had normal to low end BP-except for the past few months it's gone up & not quite sure how concerned I should really be. In Nov @ drs appt (i am also hypothyroid)145/95 didn't think a whole lot about it as the dr just mentioned it in passing that it was high-then in mid Dec-i checked it on the pharmacy machine 165/106 got alittle freaked out but pharmacist reassured me i wasn't about to blow up :) then on New Year's Eve I had my daughter in law check it as I wasn't feeling "quite right" 168/108 I'm a 45 yr old female normal weight-eat fairly healthy-room for improvement I'm sure-don't want to obsess about this & really have a phobia about drs & ER but on the other side of the coin don't want to blow up either

Yep, just thinking about your blood pressure can cause it to go up.  I had the same experience...once I was distracted a little bit by conversation with the doctor it was back down.  Now, however, I'm having the opposite problem!  I was in to my EP doctor last week and he mentioned that my rapid heartbeat with activity could be caused in part by LOW blood pressure.  I mentioned that I remember it being about 98/62 one time and he said that would definitely work into his diagnosis.  He told me to add salt to my diet and come back in one month.  I had never even thought about trouble from low blood pressure!  I can have a resting heart rate of 70-85 and when I stand up it jumps 30-40 bpm. I'm adding salt to my food now and hopefully will have some kind of answer when I go back in.  I tell you what...this forum is wonderful.  I thought I was the ONLY ONE with strange & scary "heart things" going on!

sting111,

You gotta chill.

I had skin cancer and I was cured.

I had panic attacks several times and I am getting them under control with medication and exercise.

I have been tested for STD's and I remain negative. I intend to remain negative.

I have PVC's from time to time but I have come to accept that they're benign. I don't panic over them as I used to.

My blood pressure shoots up when I take the first reading but it always drops down to normal range once I stop worrying.

Being hypochondriac is a real problem - our obsessions make us think we have diseases or disorders. It shows how powerful our minds are at making physical symptoms.

Thanks for the repsonse. I have spent the last 6 hours reading everyhting about blood pressure. I remember that my last reading in the docs office was 123/?. I became worried this was too high, especially since my dad's side of the family has heart disease. I also read that any single reading over 140 requires meds. I fear meds bc I am afraid of the side effects bc I was on anxiety meds that cuse life-long side effects (muscle twitching from prozac). I will try to forget the whole ordeal...until my next doc visit  :-/   Hopefully Ill remain calm. And this is my last time reading about hbp and any other disease online.

Need to ask here for your input since I am not lucky to get my question to the doctor.

First off I read recently that BP in doctor's office is less accurate than one taken at the home of a patient. (as long as it done accurately) They are advocating that patients buy a good monitor device for home use.

back to my question.

I am on  5 mg of Zebeta, Avalide 150, Crestor and Plavix.

I was on Topol XL 50 mg, but this was not gettintg my HR down.  Zebeta seems to be doing this but......in the past 2 weeks, I had by BP taken for various medical/dental procedures.  All three times, it was 150/50, 149/51, 152/51.  I have never had a diastolic below 63.

I am concerned that this may mean something medically and not the result of the Zebeta.  Apparently the Zebeta is not taking care of the Systolic.   I have a suspect LVOT obstruction but told not to be concerned.  Is 50 toooo low for Diastolic?

Thanks for your input....

I agree with Al.  We all need to keep an eye out on the BP and cholesterol.

My doctor's RN called on Friday and said for me not to worry about the 50 diatolic. He said if the systolic was also low then he would be concerned. He wants this monitored at home twice a day for a week and in relaxed conditions and report the numbers back to him.  Relaxed, he says...LOL   LOL   LOL

With me, just taking my BP makes me nervous as I am worried what it will read.  Hubby's BP is consistant. Always 120/70.

After reading these posts, I wish my BP ran like some of yours! I`m a 25 yr. old female who developed high BP after having my baby in 2002. My BP was running like 140/90 after having her, so I seen my Dr. about it. It even climbed to 154/117 one night, which caused me to be admitted to the hospital. However, I was taking birth control during that time & that may have caused the high numbers. I stopped taking birth control and my PCP placed me on BP medicine after that. I have been on Toprol for around 2 yrs. now. My BP still runs like 130/82 on average, sometimes I`m lucky enough to have it 117/75 w/ the medicine. I am a little over weight for my age and height- I`m 5`4. I am wondering if there are any other young females who developed high BP after having a baby and are on BP medicine? If so, how long did you have to take the medicine before it lowered? And do you still take it? I would like to eventually come off of this Toprol. I`m gonna try to lose some weight and see if that helps. The nurse at my Dr. office said I would probably be on Toprol the rest of my life, but I sure hope not... All comments are appreciated. Email me at: ***@**** Thanks...
