Blood pressure different in arms

by JMTS, Feb 26, 2008 11:50AM
I am so glad to have found this site.  My symptoms really started years ago:  dizzy spells, nausea (but never throwing up), numbness in lower left leg/ankle area, headaches.  My new symptoms are a heavy feeling in my chest, memory fog (I am very alert but sometimes can't remember phrases/words), what feels like heartburn (but isn't), exhaustion, gaining as much as two pounds a day (and not eating much at all - I am slim, 150 and 5' 11" tall), and the feeling that something is stuck in my throat.  However, the big tip off was a finding by an LPN at my local emergency care center.  I have always had low, low blood pressure, but it was always taken in my left arm.  My pressure in my left arm has always been around 75/55 or 80/60, tops.  Well, on my most recent visit to this emer care center, the young LPN said, "Boy, your blood pressure is sure low, let me check it in your other arm."  When she did, it was well over 30 points higher in my right arm!! She called in the doctor, who repeated this process two times, and both times the difference in blood pressure of the two arms was over 30 points.  The doctor told me that this was usually indicative of blockage and did an ECG right then and then.  It came back "abnormal", so she is sending me for more heart tests tomorrow (Echocardiogram, Cardiolite stress test, and a CT scan).  I believe that these tests will show blockage that is resulting in my lower pressure in my left arm. However, I am wondering if these tests will show the blockage that I feel is in my left leg, or do I need another test to show that the artery/arteries in my left leg are blocked?  Also, what is done for blocked arteries?  Any and all information is much welcomed.

I do believe in order to show blockages in the legs they would a venous doppler scan of the legs, but I am just guessing on this because that is what they did to me but who knows.  They did not find any blockages so I am not sure what they would do if they found blockages in the legs.  I am guessing depending on the severity they might try medication first.

Good luck to you!
