By-Pass surgery

By-Pass surgery

My father, who is 65, had by-pass surgery 4 months ago. The major problem that he has been suffering since then is extreme pain in his legs. The 2 veins required for his by-pass sugery were taken from his legs. The legs are always swollen too.

a) Is the pain normal after a by-pass?
b) What are the various reasons that could cause constant leg pain even after 4 months of by-pass surgery?

I would very much appreciate your response.

My wife had bypass and her leg (just1 used) was swollen for over 9 months.  We did notice that when she decerased her salt intake the swelling would be less but when she would sit for long periods it would be worse.  He should try to get in several 8 oz glasses of water a day and walk - even with pain - even around the house several times a day.  Don't forget the vein was removed and the other veins in the leg have to pick up the slack so you need to increase the blood flow.  Even though it hurts he must try to walk.  Increase the blood flow and eventually the swelling will disappear.
