CAD secondary to smoking

CAD secondary to smoking

Was 2 pack a day smoker from 1960 thru 1992.  Dx of bi-lateral bullous emphysema in early 70's.  CABG X 3 done 12/97 and currently have some recurring blockages.  TC of no more than 149 since CABG; LDL 70-80; HDL mid to low 30s and TRIG 100.  Daily Cardio Exercise (Walking and Weights) 45+ minutes. Have tried all known therapies to increase HDL.  Some time ago I was told that smoking permanently damages one's CVS. I would appreciate knowing the current thinking on the relationship between smoking, former smoking and CAD.  Could you please include sites where I could find more information on this subject.

TheBadger,

Thanks for the post.

With respect to the lungs, the thinking is that lung changes stop after approximately 10 years of smoking cessation.  The effect on the vasculature after smoking cessation is less clear, and certainly people respond differently.  It is clear, however, that smoking leads to vascular disease during the time of smoking.

A recent review appeared in the March, April, or May issue of the Journal of American College of Cardiology.

Best of luck.
