CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM

Hi:

Do you believe that calcium and magnesium can control arrhythmias and if so, in what amounts, proportions?

Thanks, Lin

Dear Linda,

I you have low calcium or low magnesium, supplements may help.  HOwever, this should be done under physician supervision.  Calcium may make you other medications less effective.

I have daily PVC's and take 250mg of over-the-counter magnesium to help. My magnesium was checked by a doctor by a bood test and was indeed low. The supplement has reduced my PVC's by up to 75%. I used to get 50 - 100 per day and now I usually get a handful and maybe on a bad day 25 or so. But, I have also heard that too much magnesium can cause palpitations, so it is a good idea to have it re-checked after starting the supplement to make sure it is not too high. Hope this helps.

Low or high levels of any electrolyte in the blood stream can cause different ill effects.  It is important to maintain adequate potassium, magnesium and calcium for good heart function.
