CHF and kidney failure

my father-in-law has chf. He has been unresponsive for a week. 6 days ago his kidnys stopped working entirely, ie not urinating at all. he is not a candidate for dialysis or transplant and has a living will prohibiting extreme measures.
My question really is this: Once your kidneys stop functioning, how long until you die from it? He's been without kidney function for 6 days so far. I would think the toxins are building up in his body. How long until can someone live without any kidney function?

Dear Amy,
My condolences on your father-in-laws condition.  His doctors can probably give you a better time frame than I can but in general one can only last days to a couple weeks without any kidney function.  This is usually a painless process and there is no suffering.  My prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
