CMV

     During a routine check-up with my family doctor, he took a blood test and told me I was a carrier of the Cytomegala Virus, but it was noting to worry about. He is a retired physician and I am worried.  Can you tell me what it is and if it can cause permanent damage to my heart if left untreated? Thanking you in advance for your time and response.

I'm not sure why your doctor was checking for cytolomeglovirus (CMV) or what test he used to check.  Most likely what he checked was a titer which only tells if you have been exposed to CMV.  In normal persons the immune system is able to fight off the infection and there are no consequences.  In persons who immune system is compromised (i.e. AIDS) it may be a problem.  If you fall in this category you should follow up with an infectious disease specialist.  Hope this helps.
