Calcium supplements and Calcium Channel Blockers

by kd, Nov 18, 1999 12:00AM
My father is on Verapamil, a calcium channel blocker.  I am on Cardizem CD.  Both of us wish to take calcium supplements but have gotten different information about whether you can take them with a calcium channel blocker.

Can we take calcium supplements with a calcium channel blocker?
If so, is there a time span between when the BP meds are taken and the supplement that is preferrable?

Dear KD,

You should inform your phsycian that you are on Ca supplements and make sure that you are not getting too much calcium in your system.

Calcium will decrease the effects of ca channel blockers at high doses.
