Can Heart Attack kill instantly?

My mother recently passed away from a heart attack. She was on cholesterol and blood pressure medicine so she was aware of her health. She took her medicine faithfully. She was a smoker but was in the process of trying to quit. The day she passed the only complaints she had the days leading up to what happened were that her feet were swollen and she had a mild headache. She was alone at home when it happened and am just wondering if it is possible for the heart attack to have been so severe that it killed her almost instantly so that she did not lie there in pain, dying. Also, given what little information I have is it even a possibility that it was in fact that severe? Other than stopping smoking, was there anything else that could have been done to prevent it?

Hi there. It must be such a difficult time for you. You must be wondering did she suffer? It sounds like it was a major attack and its doubtful she suffered, you should try concentrate on the happy times you had, sadly nothing you can do will alter whats happened. No blame attaches to you and while it must be so raw and difficult, try not to be consumed with guilt for what happened. God Bless.

I am very very sorry for your loss. The same thing happened to my step dad 4 years ago. The neighbor found him outside on the sidewalk, already deceased from a massive heart attack. I'll never know the answer but I prefer to hope he went instantly. You are in my thought.
