Can anymore be done?

by ronkar, May 27, 2003 12:00AM
My father had triple bypass in 1999.  Before a year, one artery was already clogged.  A catheterization caused a stroke.  He has high blood pressure (treated), had prostate cancer, and is a diabetic.

They used an MRI procedure late last year to check his heart since they could not use the catheter.  They said there was not a lot of change.

The doctors say his heart is too weak to endure any type of surgery.  They are treating his heart condition with medications.  He has been to the hospital twice so far this year to have fluid drained from his lungs.  They also say his kidney functions are low (not dramatically though).

They have upped his heart medications which I feel means his heart may be even weaker.

Is there anything more that can be done for him?

Ronkar,

Sorry to hear of your father's problems.

The most important thing that you could do for your father is make sure that he is seen at a center with experts in dealing with heart, aorta, and kidney disease.  Several university centers throughtout the country would fit that bill: Duke, Emory, or Vanderbilt in the South; Cleveland Clinic or Mayo Clinic in the Midwest, Harvard hospitals in the Northeast are all example centers.

The treatment options that are available for him will depend on a multitude of factors.  Be sure to take paper records and films with you wherever you decide to go.

Good luck.

I had 3 by-pass surgery (8/29/2001) and 18 1/2 months later I found out that two of these by-passes were blocked. Can anything be done?
