Cancer treatment for those with heart conditions

by Elaine, Aug 13, 1999 12:00AM
What cancer treatments for colon and kidney cancers can be tolerated by those with serious heart conditions?  My father has these cancers, as well as ischemia, unstable angina, a coronary 33 years ago, recent heart failure episodes and a bit of arythmia.  He did survive a colon operation last year that lasted about 7 hours.  Since that time he's received no treatments due to his heart, doctors have said.

Dear Elaine,

Many of the agents used to treat cancers ( anti cancer medications) may be directly toxic to the heart muscle and cause a decrease in heart function.  It is difficult to say why your physicians have opted not to treat your father for his cancers.
If his ischemia, CHF and angina have been addressed we proceed with special monitoring if needed to give therapy if therapy for the cancer is indicated.

I hope this has been useful. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to write back.
