Cardiac disease and prostate connection

Cardiac disease is common in my family.  In general, my risk factors are low.  I've just been diagnosed  enlarged prostate with a 1.5cm nodule.  I'm 52 years old.  I've read that lifestyle choices for prostate health are the same as for cardiac disease.  But there seems to be two camps:  One says low-carb "Atkins" syle is best, the other says low-fat "Ornish" style is best.  I don't have the actual numbers handy but my last blood work showed TC around 180, HDL around 50 and LDL around 100.  Does this suggest I need Atkins or Ornish?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

I've had lots of heart stents and also had my prostate removed.  I simply used my head, exercised daily, cut down on fats, carbs, ate more vegetables, and tried to lose about a pound a month.  I've lost now 45 pounds.  I wouldn't worry about the type of diet, I'd just use common sense.

Flycaster is right, it's more of a lifestyle change than a diet. Like Flycaster, I changed my diet as he discussed on January 2nd, 2007 and started exercising daily. I make sure to get at least 45 minutes and try to target 75% of my target heart rate. I don't eat empty carbs or anything high in fat or sodium. It's just common sense. I have managed to lose 65 pounds during this time, slow is better. A healthy lifestyle is good for every part of your body! Just do what works for you, just make sure it's something you can stick with.

Good luck!

Guys, thanks for the advice.   'Common sense' and I have never been on good terms but as I'm officially an old fart now, I guess we'll need to get acquaited.   I've been a marathon runner for over twenty years, which is why I never paid much attention to cholesterol.  Not being able to get an hour's run in without visiting the bushes to pee is my biggest concern right now.
