Chest pain after open heart surgery
I had open heart surgery on July 7 2009 at the Cleveland clinic for HCM A myectomy was perforformed and now about six weeks later I am experiencing severe chest pain in the area of my sternum. Is this normal after almost six weeks after surgery?

Hi Jean,

I don't feel that 6 weeks is long at all for pain to linger on with heart surgeries.  With my open-heart in 1998 and at 6 weeks out, my pain was significant, particularly in my sternum.  What I remember most about the pain is that it was a burning pain and it HURT.  My Doctor gave me a script for "Silver Nitrate" and that truly made me much more comfortable.  He said the silver nitrate was used a lot for patients on burn units.

Hope this has helped.  Please call your Doc if the pain gets worse.
