Cholesterol Medication Complications

by Robert J. Barnett, Dec 04, 1999 12:00AM
I had been on Mevacor from about 1988 to 1994 when it seemed to become less effective.  Doctor switched me to Zocor.  In 1996 I began having muscle aches and fatigue.  Medication discontinued for several weeks. Pravacol was tried. Symptoms returned.  Medication discontinued for 3 months and Totoal Chol. went from 213 to 379, TRigl. 116 to 359, HDL constant at 42.5, LDL from 154 to 265,.

Colestid at 2x per day reduced it some, but still well into high risk.  In 10/98 test while on Lolestid 3x and Lopid 2x reduced all to safe limits. Total 208, TRG =161, HDL 40, LDL 149.  Added Bios life II and they began to rise again.  12/99 after one month on Lopid and bioslife II Total = 257, TRG = 174, HDL=41, LDL=181, CK 371.

QUESTION: ARE THERE OTHER ALTERNATIVES TO BE TRIED, EVEN IN THE STATINS AND IF SO WOULD IT BE REASONABLE TO DO SO AT THIS TIME?

by CCF CARDIO MD - DLB, Dec 04, 1999 12:00AM
You have already been intolerant to two statins, so it is unlikely that you would tolerate a different one. You could see if your doctor would be willing to try niacin to lower your cholesterol.
