The book, "Dr.Atkins New Diet Revolution" advocates restricted consumption of carbohydrates with an unlimited quantity of protein in the daily diet (including fats, meats, cheese and eggs, etc). At the same time it claims this diet will also lower cholesterol.  How can this be?

Dear L Berens,

This diet causes essentially a starvation state and causes the clearance of cholesterol and other components. It does work in the short term but should only be done under medical supervision as it can cause serious electrolyte imbalances and kidney disturbances.
