Cholesterol

Whiule still employed, my cholesterol was consistently high (250-300). After retiring in 2003 however, my doctor placed me on 10mg Zocor plus Avandia to control my blood sugar which was reading high normal. I was also told to loose some weight although at 5'6" 180 lbs., I was not obese. I am now 73 and after loosing about ten pounds, my blood sugar came down to below normal afterwhich the doctor discontinued Avandia. My total cholesterol, trigliceride. HDL and LDL readings are now normal however the last reading there was a spike increase in total cholesterol. Although I fasted before the prior to the lab work, what I had for supper was rich with coconut milk which I was told is filthy with cholesterol. My question is:  Do the foods one eat before midnight fasting affect the cholesterol level?

Thank you.

Hi Don-

It is usually recommended that you fast for at least 12 hours before your lab work. It's not like surgery when they tell you "nothing to eat or drink after midnight."

If you had your labs done before this 12 hour mark, the coconut milk could most certainly have affected your total cholesterol.
