Cholestrol

by Brenda, Oct 09, 1999 12:00AM
My 44 year old husband had a heart attack and 2 angioplasty procedures with 2 stents.(both done at the same time) He has a strong family tendency to high cholestrol.  While we know he is suppose to lower it. (his total count is 238) when we look at the labels on food products we don't know what is an acceptable daily intake.  Or can't he eat anything with cholestrol even if its a small amount? he also has ankylosing spondlyitis.  Appreciate any guidance.

Dear Brenda,

Diet will not be enough in your husbands case.  Please obtain an LDL and HDL level as well as triglycerides.  Target his LDL less than 100.  This will most likely need to be accomplished with medication (a statin).

he should be on a beta blocker , ace inhibitor and aspirin if these are appropriate.
