Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Cardiomyopathy & bicuspid aortic valve

by Derek-Edwards, Feb 05, 1999 12:00AM

I am a 46 year old male. Last October I was diagnosed as having Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This was some two & a half years after having a presumed viral infection on the outside of my left lung.
At the time of infection it was discovered  during investigation into the cause of the pain I was experiencing, that I had a bicuspid aortic valve. The specialist told me that it was in good condition & should not trouble me for 25-30 years, but that I should have it checked every 5 years.
Recently I  came across the researth work of Dr A Martin Lerner of William Beaumat Hospital, Royal Oak Michigan concerning CFS & cardiomyopathy due to perhaps viral infection in the heart. Apparently 100% of the CFS patients tested had abnormal T waves in a 24 hour test & cardiomyopathy was found in many/all (?) (please excuse the imprecision here) of them.
My question is this. If Dr Lerner's research is correct,  particularly the suspicion that the heart malfunction may be due to  a virus, (I have not had any such tests myself) does my having a bicuspid aortic valve pose any greater potential problem?
  Sincerely
  Derek Edwards
