How dangerous is bypass surgery if the patient has emphysema?
After surgery what can be done to help this patient breath on his own?

Thank you for your question. The degree of difficulty involves being able to take the person off of the breathing machine. It will vary depending on the degree of lung disease. For a specific risk you should ask the surgeon. Steroids and breathing treatments are often given to help with this problem.
