Coronary artery disease (CAD)

by al, Nov 09, 2000 12:00AM
I'm in my early 50's and have no history of early CAD in my immediate family. I'm 6'1" tall and I weighed 204 lbs. I exercise strenuously regulary and have for many years. My BP is 104/70, resting pulse 60 and my total cholesterol #'s are pretty good (my "good cholesterol" number is a bit low (48.)
I have PVC's and PAC's frequently which my cardiologist feels are caused by aortic stenosis (I've had a few sonograms.)

I have another sonogram scheduled next week to check progression of my valve. If I were to need replacement surgery the doctor tells me that I'd need to be checked for CAD first.

Is it possible to have CAD with numbers like mine ?

Thank You

Dear Al,
Unfortunately just being a male in your 50's puts you at increased risk for having coronary heart disease.  However, this does not mean that you have clinical heart disease (that is needing treatment).  But it is routine practice to get an angiogram prior to valve surgery.  This way if there are any blockages they can bypass them "while they're under the hood".  After all you wouldn't want to find out you needed bypass surgery shortly after undergoing valve surgery!
