Could my weight affect it now?

by mom104, Oct 27, 2009 01:17PM
When I was 4 I had a ASD repair.  I had a hole in my heart the size of a 50 cent piece.  I am 32 now and have been struggling with my weight for a while.  Could me being overweight somehow affect what was repaired?
I don't think that it could, but lately I have been feeling weird.  I have funny feelings in my chest, shortness of breath, and almost like panic attacks.  I am worried...Should I be?

The weight is unlikely a cause of your symptoms, but the fact that you had something done to your heart puts you at risk for heart arrhythmias, which could certainly explain your symptoms.  Because there is a patch in your heart that covers the ASD, it may act as an area that allows heart arrhythmia to form.  This can be easily sorted out by wearing a heart monitor.  I would suggest doing that in your case.  Depending on what is found, these arrhythmias are usually benign and can be treated with medications.  The more persistent cases are treated with an ablation procedure.  Again, these usually aren't dangerous rhythms.
